Morpurgo books are among the most heavily read titles in many school libraries. Why is this? What makes children enjoy Michael Morpurgo books so much? The reasons are difficult to pinpoint. Obviously, his books are well-written with vivid characters and compelling stroylines, but this alone cannot explain the books’ popularity. I believe it is the fact that Micheal Morpurgo’s children’s books are often written in the first person from the point of view of a character who may or may not be based on a person who actually existed that capture the imagination. Kensuke’s Kingdom is a perfect example of this. The main character, Michael, is written as if he was a person who actually lived.
Other Morpurgo books include: The Butterfly Lion, War Horse, Tom’s Sausage Lion and Farm Boy. All of these titles are amazingly popualr among 8 – 11 year olds and are equally enjoyable when read silently or aloud. Morpurgo is still writing books at a steady pace and all of his recent titles have continued to be of the highest quality. My personal favourite is Kensuke’s Kingdom – a modern take on the Robinson Crusoe story – because I ended up really caring for the characters.
Micheal Morpurgo has written some amazing children’s books thus far, yet I have a feeling that his best work is still ahead of him.
