The Sons of God - Who Are They?

I remember when I was reading the Old Testament when God would tell the Israelites to go into the land and kill all men, women, and children and plunder everything they had. When I read this I thought that brutal of God to tell the Israelites to do such a thing. How could God tell them to kill not only the men but women and children too? I didn’t understand this. It almost made me think that God was a cruel God.

I still wonder why God did this but then I read Genesis 6-1:4 where it says, “When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to the Sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said “My spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal, his days will be a hundred and twenty years.

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the Sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. They were heroes of old, men of renown.

Now the question I ask is who are these Nephilim? And do the Sons of God mean fallen angels who came down to the earth and procreated with human women and had angelic man-made children? That sounds crazy to me. Angels in heaven do not marry but what about fallen angels? Since they are fallen, does that change their status and position in what they can and can’t do?

Some Christians believe that the Sons of God mean the Nephilim and others believe they are descendants of Seth who rebelled while the daughters of men were unrighteous descendants of Cain.

While reading and researching these two different points of view it made sense to me why God would tell the Israelites to go in and slaughter everyone in the land. If the offspring of the Nephilim were in fact fallen angels and daughters of men than the children were wicked just like they were.

The Israelites were also called the Sons of the living God. I read somewhere where it said that Satan planned this to interrupt Abraham’s seed because then Christ couldn’t be born into the seed of Abraham as God had planned.

In Genesis 19 it talks about two angels appearing as men came to Sodom and stayed with Lot and there are other accounts where angels have possessed the bodies of men. If this is so, than why couldn’t angels appearing as men procreate with human women and have children.

I think the flood occurred because God was fed up with mankind and all his corruptness. But what is unacceptable to me is when God wiped out all mankind except for Noah and his families the Nephilim were still on the earth afterwards. That tells me that angels being spiritual beings and living in another realm did not get wiped out by the flood. But God knew that too. So as it is, the world became infested with vile, diseased human existence just like the days of Sodom and Gomorrah.
