Book Review - Book Proposals That Sell

In Book Proposals That Sell: 21 Secrets to Speed Your Success, author Terry Whalin uses a personal approach to address an impersonal topic–writing a nonfiction book proposal. Mr. Whalin provides examples of his personal experience, that enable readers to view the real life of editors while offering the best strategies for getting your work in front of the publishers of choice. I used many of the the suggestions recommended by Mr. Whalin resulting in my receiving an award for one the best proposal submissions at Delaware Christian Writers Conference.

In this detailed book, Mr. Whalin not only describes what editors look for when reviewing proposals, he takes readers behind the scenes into the world of traditional publishing so they gain clarify about the acquisitions process including: details about how publishers seek new titles; why their first “acquisitions strategy” is returning to their existing authors first; why new authors face the challenges they do when submitting their work.

Mr. Whalin explained that editors are more comfortable with authors who have an “established following and a successful sales track record.” Does this mean first time authors have an uphill challenge? Yes. However, your chances are improved if you are able to provide a personal marketing plan which demonstrates a strong email or internet following, and plans for extensive outreach through conferences and speaking engagements. New authors, who can offer detailed plans like these, will improve their chances.

When authors submit book proposals and manuscripts, there is a level of anxiety while waiting for a response. Like many others, I am a product of the “waiting challenge.” Mr. Whalin provided clarity by describing a typical day in the life of an editor includes title meetings, editorial planning meetings, concept meetings, publication board, and marketing and sales meetings. At each level, a proposal can be rejected. His detailed description of each meeting reinforced the importance of following strategies that will provide the best possible opportunity for success.

Book proposals That Sell provides more than a “how to” perspective. It is a personalized conversation from an experienced editor who cares about those who sincerely want to follow the rules and get published.
