Crush It! Why Gary Vaynerchuk Says Now is the Time to Cash in on Your Passion

‘Crush It!’ will be out in Hardback, October 13, 2009. Bottom line: It’s about the importance of being your own brand. I predict an instant NYT Bestseller.

Gary was born in Russia and emigrated to the U.S. at age three. In his 20s he became co-owner of Wine Library a retail wine shop in New Jersey. After working long hours for seven years learning all about the wine making industry he realized that the Internet was the next Gold Rush and became the Gonzo-style host of his bare bones online show Wine Library TV, which became a hit. Now he’s on the talk show and speaking circuit, is represented by the Ad Agency that handles mega-stars like Oprah, and received a 7-figure book advance while the publishing industry is on life support. In the 30-days between mid-April and May 2009, his Twitter followers rocketed from 100K to 400K when he only needs to sell about 60K books the first week it’s released to have a NYT’s Bestseller. He has now eclipsed all other U.S. wine critics including heavyweight Robert Parker by virtue of his mastering of social media marketing.

We’ve all heard it, do what you love. Hustle, work hard, build up cash and brand equity in YOURSELF. Gary’s motto is “Legacy is more important than Currency.” Because of the transparency of our Google-world your grandchildren are going to know everything you’ve done; so give them the gift of family pride and a success blueprint by example. Figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life and DO IT! Be the CEO of your LIFE! The gatekeepers are no longer in charge. Pump out great content, believe in yourself and in what you do. Work hard, build a network and interact with that network. Seize niche opportunities.

Companions books I recommend to Gary’s marketing oriented ‘Crush It,’ are: ‘What Would Google Do?’ by Jeff Jarvis. ‘Wikinomics’ by Don Tapscott and Anthony Williams. You can find executive summaries online. And check out ‘Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom” and ‘Exponential Times’ on YouTube.

The bottom-line is that we are all entrepreneurs now, and we are all in this together. So like Gary, go BIG.
