The beauty of listening to audio books is that it takes me right back to childhood when my parents would read to me by the fire on a cold winters day.
My imagination is far better then any movie-maker can produce because I get to imagine the smells and all the other little things that complete a head-picture according to my emotional meaning of words.
I have just been re-listening to the story of Christopher Columbus and his trials and tribulations a long-way from home. What I can see in my head is to feel the anxiety and desperation that they must have felt when they were ship-wrecked on Christmas Day 1492. They were a long, long way from home.
And there weren’t any shipping lanes in those days! It wasn’t as if there was any likelihood that a passing ship would be able to rescue them. And the likelihood of becoming a tribal feast for a previously unknown group of ‘savages’ smoking Volcanoes was a distinct likelihood.
Christopher Columbus not only discovered America but he also discovered Tobacco.
When he saw these savages smoking cigars, he was amazed. Naturally he took some back to Queen Isabella with him.
Now there’s a new angle for Lawyers everywhere. We can blame Christopher Columbus for introducing drugs into our societies. It is a remarkable story well told and a terrific way to spend a few hours. I was lucky and got it on the free list last month.
This month the free item is an hour of classic BBC comedy. Everything from “the Goon show” through to “Dead Ringers”.
There’s nothing like an adventure to make childhood seem not-so-far back after all; but it’s even better to have a laugh knowing all that you know now as an adult.
