Book Review - A Writer's Coach By Jack Hart

They say in order to be a good writer one must read a lot, particularly books within ones intended genre. Well, I’m the type of reader who often has several books, both non-fiction and fiction, going at one time-actually, I’m that type of writer too. I fear I may suffer from some sort of literary A.D.D. Due to this condition it often takes me weeks or months to finish a particular book.

Why’d I mention this? Well, in order to adequately convey the affect Jack Hart’s book, A Writer’s Coach (Pantheon Books, 2006), had on me. Within the first chapter I knew I’d read this book straight through-the other books in my queue would have to wait.

As one of those writers who’s also tethered to another full time profession, (you know, in order to eat and other frivolous stuff), I need to make the most of what I read, whether for pleasure or edification. Amazingly, Jack Hart’s book fits neatly into both categories.

I found the book to be immensely readable and immensely informative. This book delivers “textbook” information, but in pleasurable prose. It struck me at certain points that I felt as though the author was sitting beside me providing personal instruction and support. It seemed every time a question crept into my mind, it would soon be answered as if the author had anticipated the query.

Whether you’re an aspiring or accomplished writer, this is a thorough book that delivers information in a way that I’m certain will be appreciated by both. As a former university professor and newspaper managing editor and writing coach, Jack Hart has combined his professional experience with his obvious masterful skills as a teacher in writing, A Writer’s Coach, a book that I’m sure you’ll refer to again and again.
