Texas Rangers - The Authorized History

Raised in the Dallas, TX area, I have been a Rangers fan as long as I can remember. I grew up attending Arlington Stadium, and idolizing players like Pete O’Brien, Pete Incaviglia, and Steve Buechele. The Rangers fielded competitive teams during those years, but always failed to reach the post-season. Eric Nadel’s Texas Rangers: The Authorized History documents the team’s history beginning with their transition from the Washington Senators to the Texas Rangers in 1972.

Eric Nadel is on his way to Cooperstown, as he has been the radio voice of the Rangers since 1979. He has displayed extensive dedication to his craft, and even became fluent in Spanish during the 1990′s, when the Rangers lineup was dominated by Latin players.

In 2006, Nadel signed a “lifetime contract” with the Texas. Under the terms of the deal, he will continue to be a member of their radio broadcast team until he decides to retire. He is one of only a few broadcasters to announce major league games for over 30 years, and is the only one to call them all for one organization.

The Authorized History covers in detail the Rangers first division championship. While I think Nadel goes too far in defining the 1996 season as a “prelude to a championship”, there is a lot of good information and stories. To me, a “prelude to a championship” should foreshadow something greater than an AL West title.

Things began to turn around in 1994 when the Texas team moved to the Ballpark in Arlington. The team was in first place when the season ended due to the players strike. The club missed the playoffs the following year, but subsequently won the AL West in 1996, 1998, and 1999.

As the Texas Rangers have now moved past the Alex Rodriguez/Chan Ho Park/Tom Hicks era, the book should probably be updated. The 2010 Texas Rangers appear to have the best team in franchise history, and a lot has happened since the book was first published in 1997.

Timothy Ferris Review - Author of the Four Hour Work Week

Timothy Ferris’s 4 Hour Work Week is incredible look at ever changing world of private enterprise. It is a new sign of Entrepreneurs, which are binding technology to attain Global Market, whereas outsourcing all of “Dirty Work.” Concept of this book is maximizing your prospective in life and in fact “Live the Dream,” in place of “Work hard for dream, which you have missed out.” Ferris gives viewpoint on how we must live our lives, and not work it away. He explains this new sign of Entrepreneurship as “New Rich”… term, which is likely overused for the generations to approach.

Timothy, author of best selling book, explains that agenda for the success in society nowadays is redefined by the work yourself to loss. We are time after time bombarded with lots of information, as we live in age of information and he challenges conventional ways of achievement and redefines importance of living life, which is pleasant. Isn’t that we all actually want and to live life that we live happily. In place of doing “Work for the works sake” like he explains it, we have to cut fat out of 8 to 12 hour work days plus focus on the productivity.

For people who have not read book also you are true entrepreneur, then I would recommend reading it up. It is delight of read and it will give you fresh viewpoint for ever-changing business.

Tim’s got long list of activities to his name – and he is successful entrepreneur, also he is the Princeton guest lecturer, fighter, dancer and he is the actor – but what got my focus most about Tim is he’s author of book with fascinating title as The 4-Hour Workweek.  In this book he also outlines the different ways to outsource your life and become free’d from the daily routine that so many of us face.  We have implemented a few of his strategies and not only has our income gone up, but our free time has increased.

Chew #8 by John Layman

Here we are again Mr. Chu! Tony Chu is still on Yamapalu (which I Googled, and it is not a real location (or maybe it is a secret location?(or maybe google doesn’t know about Yamapalu? (or maybe they know and they don’t want us to know?) and he is being jerked around by the locals. He is placed in a holding cell by the local constable where he is tormented by the brutes already in custody. They deliver a multitude of swirlies to him junior high style. And he gets to taste all the nonsense left in the toilet bowl, YUCK.

This happens to be the second time I can remember in the comic where Tony Chu absolutely loses it with anger. (the first time being when he begins to eat the face of the killer in issue #1) He gets pissed off and begins to attack the brutes, thoroughly beating them about the head and shoulders until knuckles are painted with bloody vengeance. After biting one of them, he and the constable (who now believes that Tony is actually with the FDA) go on a wild goose chase (chicken actually) from hidden grave, to hidden cockfighting league, to the king of cocks himself, Poyo the chicken. Good story, though not as grabbing as some of the earlier issues, I hope that John Layman isn’t running out of steam because I would like to see this comic continue for a long long time! Most intriguing moment: does anyone know what raw ALIEN fruit tastes like!?!?

One piece of criticism with this issue: If you are going to put a bada** chicken on the front with metal headgear and a title like “king of cocks”, then you better show us a chicken whooping some trash! All they show is a bunch of fight posters that showcase the many matches Poyo has been in, not one finger bit or one eye pecked in the entire issue. We’ll see what the next has to bring.

Happy Hour at Casa Dracula - Vampire Novel

Happy Hour at Casa Dracula by Marta Acosta (Pocket, 2006).

While reading this book I continually had a smile on my face except when I was laughing out loud. Acosta is a witty, clever writer who keeps your attention with lovable characters (even the bad guys) and an entertaining plot. Narrator Milagro de la Cruz has a rye sense of humor especially while describing the crazy situations she finds herself in like being kidnapped by an old boyfriend from college, a fellow with a hyphenated anglo-wasp name, Sebastian Beckett-Witherspoon, and also when she is rescued by someone she suspects of being a vampire.

But lets backup a moment. Both MIlagro and Sebastian together attended a Fancy University which Milagro refers to throughout as F.U. Sebastian has become a well known writer, and a client of Mil’s – Katherine – throws a party to celebrate his new book. Also attending is the handsome, very alluring Oswald who invites Milagro to have a drink with him at his hotel’s bar. She accepts. Too bad the bar has been taken over by a large group, but the manager offers to serve anything required in Oswald’s suite. Quickly the conversation turns to Sebastian. Oswald is quite curious about this guy so Mil figures out that he isn’t really interested in her writing. She’s miffed. But Oswald has such gorgeous eyes and such a sweet seductive smile.

They begin passionately kissing. Mil cannot resist this guy. They are so lustfully intertwined that they fall, shattering a glass table. Each one suffers a small cut on the lips. This does not hamper the hungry for sex Milagro who reaches for Oswald and plants a big kiss tasting a bit of his blood. She barely noticed when he tried to pull away before they kissed. He had a good reason. His kind must be careful. Just then Sebastian breaks in and begins yelling for this to stop. While the two men argue Mil grabs her bag and runs from the room.

For the next several days she is terribly sick, like the worst flue in the world. She can’t eat except when satisfying a cravings for red meat juice. Soon after her recovery she is abducted by Sebastian, who turns out to be a member of Corporate America for the Conservation of America. CACA for short. Their mission is to rid the world of vermin like Oswald AND Milagro – Vampires! Now Mil knows he’s crazy. But maybe not! Only after being rescued, and housed at Casa Dracula, does the truth reveal itself.

Marta has a grand sense of humor. The next book in the series is Midnight Brunch (Pocket, 2007) followed by The Bride of Casa Dracula (Pocket, 2008).

3 Ways to Get Your Boyfriend to Appreciate Edward

Let’s face it girls: Nobody beats Edward. He’s kind, caring, loving, handsome, sparkly, romantic, giving, and self-sacrificing. He knows how to make Bella smile, laugh, cry, and live. And he fights for what he believes in. So how do you convince your boyfriend that Edward rocks? Boyfriends far and wide are jealous of Edward: they obviously can’t stand up to him! Their jealousy morphs into hatred of the character-and they didn’t even read the book! Throwing glitter onto your boyfriend doesn’t poof him into Edward. Not even biting him on the neck will do the trick. Here are ten easy ways to convince your boyfriend that Edward is awesome-even if he (sadly) isn’t real.

Edward’s first attractive quality is his tormented soul. He constantly fights between good and evil and wants to be good all the time, even though he feels as if his soul is lost forever. When you’re talking with your boyfriend, remind your boyfriend that despite Edward’s dashing good looks and sparkling personality, that the main reason all girls love him is because he cares. Every girl wants to feel as if the guy she’s dating someone who cares about things that happen around him. He doesn’t just live in a world where the sun and everyone else revolves around him. A girl wants a guy who actively pursues a cause. It doesn’t have to be about saving the environment from destruction, but something as simple as wanting to be protective helps.

Edward’s life is Bella. He yearns for her always and even would rather die than be without her. He always wants to protect her and would sacrifice his own life for her. Now, if your boyfriend ever takes this love and overprotectiveness too far then it’s time to find a new beau. Being protective and showing his love is just one way to demonstrate that your boyfriend cares about you. In the end, girls just want to feel loved. They don’t want to be overburdened by love, but some sign of affection rocks.

If your boyfriend still insists on calling Edward a pansy, then force him to read the books on tape. Well, not really. You can’t force people to do something they don’t want to. Maybe instead you should take the time to bring up Edwards dashing good looks. Now, your beau is as handsome as your eye perceives him to be. But Edward has style and actually cares about his outward appearance. He puts together his outfit and looks presentable. What girl wouldn’t want that? A person’s inner beauty counts more than their outer beauty, sure. But people make first impressions based on appearance. And if your boyfriend appears to be a bum based on appearance, then maybe he needs a style tip from Edward.

If all else fails, then find a bunch of Twilight party favors to decorate your room. This way, whenever he comes visit you he’ll be in Twiland. Between posters and the party favors, he’ll never forget Edwards face and he’ll constantly be reminded of his competition.

Just kidding!

Although Edward is a great character, it’s important to remember that you’re with your boyfriend for a reason and you shouldn’t break up with him because he isn’t Edward. But it doesn’t hurt to try and make him realize Edward’s awesomeness every now and then.
